On the back of a couple of close but ultimately disappointing results during 2012, the 1st XV travelled to the capital for the unenviable task of facing the newly crowned League Champions – ASRV Ascrum RFC.
Leaving behind the torrential rain in Groningen, the 1st XV were instead faced with blustery conditions at the De Eendracht National Rugby Stadium. Coach Murphy was afforded the luxury of being able to field a strong team, along with an equally strong substitution bench. Each of the squad knew the enormity of the task ahead – to inflict Ascrum’s first league defeat of the season and on their own turf.
Captain Noltes made arguably his best move of the game by winning the coin toss and rightly chose to put the wind behind Groningen’s backs.
The visiting XV showed their commitment right from the start and Ascrum quickly realised they had a difficult game on their hands. Some thoughtful place kicking from Noltes exploited gaps far down the corners of the field and hemmed in the Amsterdam Students’ backline.
The wind was certainly not conducive to long lineout throws. Quick thinking from Timmerman saw the ‘XBox’ being unleashed on the front of the lineout. Peters never quite managed the 360, but adequately made meters with the quick 180 turn from the front of the line.
That sort of intelligent, tactical play proved to be pivotal to Groningen’s success throughout the match. The forwards organisation in the defence line during breakdowns was a joy to witness for scrum-half Clark. The few times the Ascrum attack penetrated the front-line, the Groningen 3-quarters and centre line covered with ease.
An infringement in the Ascrum 22 allowed Van Bezouw to calmly convert a penalty and take a narrow 0-3 lead, in what proved to be an assured kicking display from the winger throughout the day.
Ascrum did periodically show glimpses of why they are crowned champions by camping themselves in the Groningen 22 for a good periods of the first half. Some good runs by their back line were finally stopped by some excellent tackles from De Groot and Tjarko; the latter managing to shake off a nasty head concussion in order to bravely continue the game.
However the breakthrough came from Groningen, whose back row made a quick break from a ruck at the half way line. Taking a quick pop, Brink offloaded to Hendriks. Pinning his ears back he made 30 metres towards the try line, fending off the last-gasp Ascrum backline pressure and touching down to take the lead. A deserved try for him and his team – that brought with it an air of confidence to the underdog visitors. 0-8 at half-time.
During the half time oranges, Groningen were obviously delighted to be in front. A jaded Jared was substituted and a shuffle around the pack was required. Biezeman to prop, Brink to No.8 and the oncoming Kleppe was placed in 2nd row.
Coach Murphy did not have to remind the team that they needed 20% extra effort in the 2nd half against the increasing strength of wind. And boy did they deliver….
As expected, Ascrum utilised the wind during their ensuing onslaught. Each attack was met by tackle after tackle from the Northern side. Rather undeservedly the referee awarded a debatable infringement in front of the visitors posts and ultimately allow the students to cut the lead to 3-8.
Now playing the majority of the second half in their own 22, Groningen found it difficult to kick against the wind and make any sort of meaningful gain line. Instead they opted to play the majority of the play in the forwards, whilst spinning the ball out to their pacey backs when gaps were created. From there the centre pairing of Venema and Bruins were able to use their strength and pace to make significant progress on the break.
It was a similar break-away try from a half-way line scrum that enabled Groningen to surprisingly extend their narrow lead. Brink picked up from his new No.8 position at the back of the scrum. On a marauding run he offloaded in the tackle to Clark. Quickly realising his aging legs would not make the journey to glory, the Scotsman looked for options and swung a pass out to the right. The ever supporting de Wit duly accepted a gift of a pass and did the hard meters to score just to the left of the posts. Van Bezouw calmly converted to make it 3-15.
The goal now was to defend the lead. The forward pack managed this to a degree but a lapse in concentration allowed for an interception and resulting in a converted Ascrum try under the posts. 10-15.
Some calm words from the travelling coaching team brought clarity to the visiting side. Patient, 10-man rugby in phases would win the match. The forward pack picked themselves up from the brief moment of disappointment and produced a match winning display for the final 15 minutes of the match. Endless Pick & Go’s from Terpstra and Steenstra were bolstered by tireless defence around the ruck from Biezeman, Timmerman and Kleppe. This allowed for structured, multiple phases and in order to slowly wind down the clock, much to frustration of Ascrum team and the capacity stadium crowd.
The referee eventually announced the final play and the subsequently kicked into row Z of the stand - to the visible delight of the visitors. Groningen claimed the first win against the League Champions of the season and with that also secured their place in the division for Season 2012-13.
A special mention should go to the team spirit shown by all during the trip to Amsterdam, especially the youthful, but talented, unused substitutions bench that will be the core of the 1st XV in future years to come. Also to Coach Conor for the countless kilometers travelled in supporting youth and senior team rugby this week (Groningen x2, t’Gooi, Rotterdam and Amsterdam!)

Na een paar teleurstellende resultaten in 2012, reisde het 1e XV team vol goede moed naar de hoofdstad om het tegen de pas gekroonde 2e klasse Noord Kampioen - ASRV Ascrum RFC op te nemen.
Met een sterk team, en even sterke wissels op de bank reisde coach Murphy af naar De Eendracht, het Nationale Rugby Stadion. De ploeg was zich bewust van de zware taak: Het winnen van Ascrum op hun eigen grasmat om ze de eerste competitie nederlaag van het seizoen toe brengen.
Captain Noltes begon goed door de toss te winnen en te kiezen om met de wind mee te beginnen.
Het 1e XV speelde vanaf het begin af aan fanatiek en Ascrum realiseerde zich al snel dat dit een moeilijke wedstrijd werd. Sommige goed geplaatste ‘place kicks’ door Noltes zorgden meteen voor problemen in de Amsterdamse Studenten backline.
De wind was niet bevorderlijk voor een lange lineout. Een slimme aktie van Timmerman zorgde voor een goed uitgevoerde 'XBox' tijdens de lineout. Het lukte Peters niet om zijn 360 beweging te maken maar met een geslaagde 180 maakte die toch lekker wat meters.
Het intelligente spel van Groningen bleek cruciaal voor het slagen van de wedstrijd. De forwards organisatie was een genot voor scrum-half Clark. De paar keren dat de aanval van Ascrum doordrong tot de front-line werd die door de 3-kwarten en de centers van Groningen met gemak verdedigt.
Een overtreding in het Ascrum 22 gebied bezorgde XV een penalty. Deze werd door Van Bezouw benut en gaf XV een voorsprong van 0-3.
Ascrum liet regelmatig zien waarom ze de gekroonde kampioenen zijn in de eerste helft. Een aantal goede runs door hun back line werden gestopt door uitstekende tackles van Groot en Tjarko, de laatste kreeg een flinke klap op zijn kop maar speelde de wedstrijd gewoon uit.
Groningen nam afstand door een snelle break vanuit de ruck door de back rows op de helft van het veld. Brink passte naar Hendriks die een flinke sprint van 30 meter trok naar de try line. Hendriks hield de verdediging van de Ascrum af en scoorde een welverdiende try voor het team. Dit gaf de Groningers moed. 0 – 8 ruststand.
Sinaasappels tijdens de rust en de Groningers waren zichtbaar blij dat ze voor stonden. De afgematte Jared werd vervangen en het pack werd aangepast. Biezeman op prop, Brink op nr. 8 en de beginnende Kleppe in de 2e rij.
Coach Murphy hoefde het team niet te vertellen dat zij 20% extra inspanning nodig zouden hebben in de 2e helft vanwege de toenemende wind. En of ze rugby speelde!
Zoals verwacht, maakte Ascrum goed gebruik van de wind tijdens hun eerste aanval. Elke aanval werd echter tenietgedaan door tackles van het Noordelijke team. Geheel onterecht gaf de scheidsrechter een betwistbare overtreding voor de goal van de bezoekers wat ervoor zorgde dat de voorsprong door de studentjes werd verkleind tot 3-8.
Een vergelijkbare try zorgde er voor dat Groningen uitliep op de Amsterdammers. Brink pakte de bal op zijn nieuwe nr. 8 positie aan de achterkant van de scrum. Hij sprintte en passte naar Clark. Clark realiseerde zich al snel dat hij het niet ging redden en passte naar de Wit. De Wit wist wel raad met een pass op maat en scoorde links van de palen. Van Bezouw nam kalm de conversie voor zijn rekening, 3 – 15.
Doel was nu de voorsprong te behouden. Dit lukte het forward pack maar gedeeltelijk, een klein foutje werd onmiddellijk afgestraft met een onderschepping en een Ascrum try onder de palen. 10 – 15.
Een paar woorden van het coaching team bracht duidelijkheid aan het 1e XV team. Geduld en 10-man rugby in 'phases' zou nodig zijn om de wedstrijd uit te spelen. Het forward pack zette zich over de teleurstelling heen en wist de wedstrijd veilig te stellen in de laatste 15 minuten. Ontelbare ‘Pick & Go's’ van Terpstra en Steenstra werd versterkt met de verdediging rond de ruck van Biezeman, Timmerman en Kleppe. Dit was precies wat de coach bedoelde met gestructureerd en met meerdere 'phases' rugby. Langzaam tikte de tijd weg tot grote frustratie van het Ascrum team en de toeschouwers.
De scheidsrechter floot uiteindelijk af en de bal werd in rij-Z getrapt onder zichtbaar genoegen van de bezoekers. Groningen won voor de eerste keer van de 2e Klasse Noord Kampioen van dit seizoen en was daarmee ook verzekerd van een plaats in deze klasse voor seizoen 2012-13.
Het hele team heeft een fantastische teamspirit getoond tijdens de reis naar Amsterdam, in het bijzonder de jeugdige talentvolle wissels. Die de kern van de toekomstig van het 1e XV vormen.
